The Ministry of Roads and Transport has vowed to take firm and decisive action against any violations following a tragic road accident along the Nyeri-Mweiga Road at Yunis area on March 28, 2026, which claimed 15 lives and left several others injured.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, 29 March, Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the Ministry, in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and other enforcement agencies, will “thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash and take firm, decisive action against any violations.”

He expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending “heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and communities who have lost their loved ones” and praying for the swift recovery of those injured.

The CS noted that this tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the shared responsibility all road users bear, stressing that enforcing compliance and ensuring accountability are critical measures to prevent future tragedies.

The Cabinet Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening road safety measures, enforcing regulations, and safeguarding all highway users.

“Through the NTSA and other enforcement agencies, we will intensify enforcement, audits, and compliance checks across our highways to ensure accountability and protect all road users,” Chirchir said.

He further urged motorists to exercise caution, adhere strictly to traffic rules, and prioritize safety, adding that “every life matters.”

NTSA had on Saturday ordered an immediate fleet audit of the vehicles involved and deployed a multi-agency team to conduct a forensic reconstruction of the accident.

Preliminary findings by NTSA pointed to reckless driving, excessive speeding, and a possibly unroadworthy lorry as key factors that led to the tragedy.

The authority also intensified enforcement along major highways to remove unsafe vehicles, particularly PSVs and commercial trucks.

“If these suspicions are confirmed, this was a preventable catastrophe,” the Director General said, warning that those found responsible would be held fully accountable as investigations continue.
